The leaders of the European Union (EU) are considering the possibility of providing guarantees to Ukraine, which will be similar to the fifth article of the NATO collective security treaty, under which military assistance to Kiev will be increased. This was announced on August 19 by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, at a press conference following an emergency online EU summit.

"Now is the time to accelerate our practical work, to put into effect guarantees similar to article five of NATO, while maintaining the participation of the United States," Costa said.

He also noted that the Ukrainian army should become the "first line of defense", in this regard, it is necessary to strengthen military support.

As the Newspaper emphasizes.Ru", the fifth article of NATO implies that an armed attack on one of the countries will be considered as an attack on the entire alliance.

The publication also notes that at the end of the summit, a written statement from the 27 EU countries did not appear, as it had previously been after the meetings of the association.

On August 18, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and American leader Donald Trump met at the White House. The closed-door talks lasted about 30 minutes. After that, the American and Ukrainian presidents talked with the leaders of the European Union countries.

The next day, on August 19, Trump declared that the transfer of Crimea to Ukraine was impossible, as was its accession to NATO. He added that security guarantees for Ukraine cannot include the protection of the alliance, but the United States will be ready to help European countries with this.

On the same day, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that the United States would discuss with Russia acceptable security guarantees for Ukraine. According to her, the United States does not intend to deploy its troops in Ukraine as part of providing it with security guarantees.
