The sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) countries against Russia have not exerted significant pressure on the country, but have only rallied it. This was stated on August 19 by the Member of the European Parliament (EP) from the Czech Republic, Katerina Konecna.

"The European Union claimed that it would not talk to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, that Russia should be left to starve. The sanctions clearly did not work, they only rallied Russia. Let's talk about the mistakes we've made, but also let's stop lying to ourselves. Ukraine cannot cope on its own, and it is not necessary to promise them this," she said on CNN Prima News.

The MP also stressed that Europe is not capable of continuing the military conflict on the side of Ukraine. Konecna cited data from a Gallup poll showing that almost 70% of Ukrainians want the conflict to end.

"So when we're not talking about what [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky wants, but what Ukrainians want, let's understand that they want the conflict to end, and tomorrow Trump will just dictate a plan to them and tell them whether to accept it or not," she added.

European Commission (EC) representative Ariana Podesta said on August 14 that the European Union (EU) has no plans to ease anti-Russian sanctions in the event of a diplomatic settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. Podesta also denied reports by the British TV channel Sky News that the EU is allegedly exploring the possibility of easing sanctions in the event of a truce in Ukraine. The EC representative recalled that the European Union has already adopted 18 packages of sanctions against Russia, and preparations are underway for the 19th.
