- Rubio warned about the consequences of imposing sanctions on China for refining Russian oil
The United States fears that an attempt to punish China with sanctions for refining Russian oil through secondary sanctions could have negative consequences for global energy prices, causing them to rise. This was announced on August 17 by the American Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to him, even in this scenario, China will continue to refine Russian oil, which will then enter the world market.
"Anyone who buys this oil will pay more for it, or if there is no oil, they will have to look for alternative sources," Rubio said in an interview with Fox News.
Rubio also mentioned that European countries had previously expressed concern about such possibilities, in particular, when the Senate bill on 100 percent duties on China and India was discussed. He noted that then a number of European states made it clear that they did not welcome such a turn of events.
On August 12, US President Donald Trump signed a decree suspending the increase in duties on goods from China for a period of 90 days. He also noted that all previous agreements remain the same.
On August 8, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on Trump's statement about the possible imposition of duties on Russian oil supplies to China. It was clarified that China considers it legitimate and lawful to import oil from Russia and intends to act in accordance with its national interests.
On August 7, Trump announced new sanctions against Russia's trading partners. At the same time, the politician did not rule out that the United States could subsequently cancel duties of 25% against India for the purchase of Russian oil. In addition, restrictions on trade with Russia may be imposed on China.
