Bild revealed the names of Zelensky's potential companions at a meeting with Trump
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will call this Sunday, August 17, to decide which of them will accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington for a meeting with the head of the White House, Donald Trump. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on August 16, citing government sources.
"[Merz, Starmer and Macron] want to coordinate their actions and decide together on Sunday which of them will go to the United States. However, there must be an official invitation for this," the source's message is quoted in the publication.
The publication stressed that Zelensky was allowed to take with him to the talks any of the European politicians who, as specified, want to "prevent the meeting from turning into a show at any cost."
On August 16, Zelensky announced a meeting with Trump, which will be held on August 18 in Washington. Later that day, Michaela Kufner, editor-in-chief of the Deutsche Welle policy department (DW is recognized as a foreign agent and an undesirable organization in the Russian Federation), pointed out the absence of a direct invitation from European leaders to this summit. She called the question of who will go to the talks with the Ukrainian president "open."
Politico newspaper learned on August 16 that Zelensky's "favorite interlocutor", Finnish President Alexander Stubb, could become a potential companion in negotiations with Trump. European countries are sending him to the United States so that he does not allow conflict to arise during the conversation between Zelensky and Trump.
