The ruling Moldovan Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) is trying to put pressure on the opposition and demonstrate the position of the authorities towards the population of Gagauzia. Diana Karaman, a member of the Moldovan Parliament from the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM), told Izvestia about this on August 14.

"Brussels has given the green light to such actions by the PAS. But I am sure that these guarantees from Brussels will not be able to ensure that the authorities evade responsibility," she shared in a conversation with Izvestia.

The MP expressed her opinion on the verdict of the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Hutsul, saying that the actions of the authorities showed their true attitude towards the residents of Gagauzia, exerting pressure on those who speak the truth and defend the interests of the autonomy.

"This is an attempt to show other political opponents what will happen to them if they continue to resist the authorities," the politician concluded.

Karaman is convinced that attempts at intimidation will only strengthen the opposition's resolve to resist the current regime.

At the same time, actions in support of Hutsuls continue in Moldova, where people express their opinions through posters and slogans.

On August 5, Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison in the case of her alleged financing of the Shor party. Journalist Vasyl Moiseenko clarified that initially the prosecutor's office requested nine years in prison for the Hutsuls. On the same day, Evgenia Hutsul reported on the great support provided to her — the people of the autonomy gathered at the courthouse, where her family members were not allowed at the time of sentencing.

On August 13, it became known that international lawyers, including French human rights activist William Julie and Gonzalo Boye, a legal consultant at the European Center for Constitutional Human Rights, joined the defense of the interests of the Bashkan of Gagauzia. They are known for their involvement in high-profile political cases involving politicians who have confronted government overreach.

On August 13, Yuri Vitnyansky, the leader of the youth movement of the Moldovan opposition bloc Pobeda, told Izvestia that the accusations against the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, have no evidence base. He clarified that she is being persecuted only because she represents the "rebellious Gagauz people."

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
