US President Donald Trump does not want to impose new sanctions against Russia in light of the conflict in Ukraine, and his policy priority is diplomacy. This was announced on August 14 by White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.

"The president has a lot of tools that he can use if necessary, but he has always said that diplomacy and negotiations are his main way to end this conflict," she said in a conversation with Fox News channel.

She noted that the American leader has every opportunity to take restrictions and "many other measures" to influence Moscow, but he can take such steps only if a situation really arises that is forced to do so. According to her, Trump expects that the upcoming summit of Russia and the United States in Alaska will not change his decision.

On August 13, Sky News TV channel announced the possibility of easing European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia in the event of a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. At the same time, in the case of a temporary truce, anti-Russian sanctions will continue to apply.

In turn, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said at the same time that in the event of an unsuccessful outcome of the Russian-American summit in Alaska, Washington could strengthen sanctions. He added that sanctions can be both tightened and weakened. According to him, restrictions may also have a limited duration or be indefinite.
