The Japanese walking trend, which suggests a significant improvement in health in 30 minutes, continues to gain popularity. This is evidenced by the data of a study published on the Medical Xpress portal.

The trend, dubbed "Japanese walking," has gone viral on social media after a video by Australian fitness trainer Eugene Teo gained tens of millions of views. The method involves alternating fast and slow walking in three-minute intervals, in just 30 minutes. Theo adapted the scientifically based methodology, making it accessible to a wide audience. He stressed that his video was relevant for people overwhelmed by the demands of 10,000 steps per day.

Research shows that high-intensity interval walking can be beneficial for middle-aged and elderly people. One study involving 186 women and 60 men found that those who practiced Japanese walking four or more times a week improved blood pressure, leg strength, and aerobic capacity.

However, despite the positive reviews, experts express skepticism about the effectiveness of the method. Cardiologist Helga Van Heerle pointed out possible shortcomings in the study, in particular, the lack of accelerometers in the group with moderate walking intensity. Other experts noted that the method requires further research and is not universal. Nevertheless, they support any activity that promotes the movement, but urge caution when promoting such a trend.

Theo summed up that fitness trends should always be taken with caution. He clarified that he does not claim that Japanese walking can replace traditional walking, but considers it a great start for cardio.

Evgeny Kokin, PhD, cardiologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia on August 2 that leg pain after a long walk can be a sign of atherosclerosis. Such pains, called intermittent claudication, occur due to insufficient blood supply to the muscles during physical exertion and are a symptom of obliterating atherosclerosis of the arteries of the lower extremities.
