The European Union (EU) has stressed the need for a ceasefire in order to conduct constructive negotiations on Ukraine. This is evidenced on August 12 by the statement of the leaders of the EU member states, published on the website of the European Council.

According to the publication, the leaders of the European Union welcomed the efforts of US President Donald Trump to resolve the conflict and achieve a just and lasting peace.

"The path to peace in Ukraine cannot be solved without Ukraine's participation. Constructive negotiations can be conducted only in conditions of a cease—fire or a reduction in hostilities," the statement reads.

It is specified that the European Union, in coordination with the United States and other partners, will continue to provide Ukraine with support in the political, economic, humanitarian and military spheres. The bloc also expressed its intention to continue to apply restrictive measures against the Russian Federation.

Earlier, on August 9, the EU countries welcomed Trump's efforts to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and asked him to protect the interests of Kiev and its allies. It is noted that the politicians who signed the statement stressed the need for active diplomacy to resolve the conflict.

Later, on August 10, The New York Times reported on the demands of EU and Ukrainian representatives ahead of Trump's talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was clarified that the EU and Kiev demanded from the United States guarantees of security for Ukraine and the opportunity to join NATO.
