The growing popularity of the "Nicolas pays for Everything" movement in the French Internet segment threatens the power of French President Emmanuel Macron and may help Marine Le Pen, the head of the National Unification Party parliamentary faction, win the 2027 elections. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on August 11.

The origin of the Internet movement has been linked to a 2020 meme depicting a middle-aged man holding his head. It is assumed that it is the average "Nicolas" who pays the bills of pensioners, as well as benefits for migrants and French assistance in the development of Africa.

According to the newspaper, earlier the movement "Nicolas pays for everything" was spread mainly among supporters of far-right groups, but recently it has gone beyond this narrow group and began to spread, including among representatives of Macron's electorate. It is specified that since the beginning of the year, more than 503 thousand publications with the hashtag "Nicolas pays for everything" have been posted, and activity has increased sharply since June.

The author of the article notes that the Elysee Palace pays attention to the movement. In addition, Paris is concerned about calls for protests on September 10, which are gaining momentum among online groups opposed to the French leader.

As opinion researcher Bruno Jeanbard emphasized, Macron's supporters "have every reason to worry" about this movement, as it affects the president's electorate.

"The question is whether this movement signals a deeper shift, with younger middle—income generations turning away from the mainstream parties, potentially moving to far-right groups, including Le Pen's National Rally," Jeanbard said.

In his opinion, if Le Pen's party manages to reach these categories of voters, it will increase the opportunity to win a majority in the 2027 elections.

On July 21, Le Figaro reported, citing an IFOP/JDD poll, that Macron and French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou form the most unpopular tandem in the country. It is noted that only 19% of French people are satisfied with the president's work, while the approval rating of the country's prime minister was 18%. Thus, the level of cumulative support for this political pair was 37%.
