- Bloomberg learned about Switzerland's plans to abandon the purchase of F-35 from the United States due to duties
Switzerland intends to abandon the purchase of American F-35 and F-35A fighter jets amid the imposition of duties by US President Donald Trump in the amount of 39% against the country. This was reported on August 7 by Bloomberg, citing sources.
"Swiss politicians from different parties are seeking to cancel an order for three dozen F-35A fighter jets from the American defense conglomerate Lockheed Martin Corp after Trump imposed some of the toughest duties in the world in the country," the material says.
At the same time, Green Party MP Balthazar Glattley, who introduced the draft initiative, said that the United States should not receive encouragement from Switzerland after Washington "threw a stone at it in trade."
"I do not know how our people will accept the purchase of F-35 fighter jets at a price higher than initially expected, especially after the shock caused by American duties," Hans—Peter Portmann, a deputy from the Free Democratic Party, said in an interview with the agency.
It is noted that the proposal to cancel the procurement project may be considered in the country's parliament as early as September this year. At the same time, a full or partial termination of the contract will be proposed for the subsequent cooperation of Switzerland with other European partners.
On August 4, American political scientist Malek Dudakov said that the tariffs imposed by Trump on Switzerland at 39% could have a significant impact on the country's economy. He noted that such measures would also have a negative impact on the Swiss watch market, which plays an important role in the country's economy.
On August 1, the American leader imposed additional duties on imported goods from the European Union and more than 60 foreign countries. The highest tariffs were imposed on goods from Laos, Myanmar (40% each) and Syria (41%). Also, goods from countries that have not concluded an agreement with the United States are subject to a duty of 10%.
