US President Donald Trump's tariff threats against China are an empty phrase. Pavel Feldman, Candidate of Political Sciences, Professor at the Academy of Labor and Social Relations, told Izvestia on August 7.

"China has repeatedly made it clear to the United States that it will not succumb to American tariff blackmail. And this time, nothing will change. For objective reasons, Trump cannot impose tariffs on Chinese goods without causing enormous damage to his own economy," the source said.

He explained that a significant part of high-tech in the United States depends on components manufactured in China.

In addition, Feldman warned that the introduction of US duties on Chinese imports could cause a sharp increase in inflation in the United States, which, in turn, would lead to discontent among Trump voters and members of the Republican Party.

"In addition, Beijing will definitely take symmetrical restrictive measures against American goods, which will hurt Washington. Therefore, the US president's tariff threats against China are an empty phrase. They are fundamentally impossible," the political scientist concluded.

On August 6, Trump said that restrictions on trade with Russia could be imposed on China. He noted that Beijing is a leader in Russian oil purchases.

The next day, on August 7, the American leader announced his intention to impose duties of 100% on imports of chips and semiconductors. According to Trump, many companies are currently leaving their former locations and moving production to the United States.
