US President Donald Trump uses trade duties against other countries as sanctions, but even in this format they harm the American economy. This was stated on April 7 by political scientist, retired lieutenant Colonel of the US Army Earl Rasmussen in an interview with Izvestia.

"I am not in favor of tariffs, as well as sanctions. In fact, he uses tariffs as sanctions. And he uses them not only against his enemies, but also against our closest allies. This is absurd," the expert said.

He added that the introduction of tariffs could increase inflation in the United States. However, the real effects of the restrictions will become noticeable within 90 days or six months.

Sanctions may also lead to the withdrawal of some countries from trade relations with the United States.

"Brazil has said it will simply stop trading with the United States. They have a positive trade balance, that is, the United States sells them more than it imports, and the United States will simply lose this market," the political scientist drew attention.

According to Rasmussen, Trump is currently "heading in the wrong direction." The actions of the American president create tensions in relations with both opponents and allies of the United States.

On August 6, Trump signed a decree imposing an additional 25% duty on imports from India. The White House clarified that this measure was introduced in connection with India's "direct or indirect" import of petroleum products from the Russian Federation.

Prior to that, on August 4, the American leader warned that he would significantly increase duties on India due to imports of Russian oil. He stated that the country sells most of it on the open market, making huge profits. On the same day, it was reported that India and Brazil refused to stop buying oil from Russia, despite threats from Trump.
