Men with low sperm quality are at risk of premature death
Men with low sperm quality have a higher risk of premature death and hospitalization. Abnormal sperm counts may be associated with an increased risk of cancer. This is stated in the Medscape material, which was reviewed by Izvestia on August 7.
According to research, poor sperm quality can be not only a sign of fertility problems, but also a signal of more serious health problems. Men with sperm disorders, such as low sperm concentration or low mobility, have a higher risk of premature death and hospitalization. This is due to the fact that abnormal sperm counts can be an indicator of hidden diseases.
According to one study, men with oligospermia and azoospermia (when sperm is almost completely or completely absent) have a 67% higher risk of death compared to men with normal indicators. However, men with seminal fluid disorders also have an increased risk of cancer, including prostate and testicular cancer.
"Our research has shown that men with two or more abnormal sperm parameters have a 2.3 times higher risk of death. Such indicators may indicate genetic or environmental factors that increase the risk of diseases," explained one of the authors of the study.
In addition, the researchers claim that sperm quality can be a useful indicator of a man's overall health, allowing timely detection of diseases such as cancer or chronic diseases and taking measures to prevent them.
Research shows that poor sperm quality and its decline over the decades has been linked to a number of factors, including exposure to chemicals, poor nutrition, and low physical activity. The effects of toxic substances such as phthalates and bisphenol A can disrupt hormonal balance and affect sperm health, reducing their motility and ability to fertilize.
However, according to the researchers, sperm quality can be improved by making lifestyle and nutrition changes. For example, micronutrient supplements such as vitamin E, L-carnitine, and zinc can significantly improve sperm quality and increase the chance of conception. In one study, it was proved that after three months of improvement in nutrition and supplements, the main parameters of sperm, such as concentration and mobility, improved.
Earlier, on June 17, Alexander Sysoev, oncourologist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia about an analysis that helps detect prostate cancer. According to him, a blood test for prostate-specific antigen helps to detect a dangerous disease at an early stage, when the tumor has not yet metastasized to neighboring organs.
