Don't give a damn about everyone: Why can't you ignore hunger and fatigue?

Doctors recommend that you be careful about the natural manifestations of the body, such as sneezing, coughing and yawning. It is also impossible to suppress emotions and restrain feelings, but it must be done in harmony with oneself and others. Why physiological reactions and basic needs cannot be limited and what consequences attempts to restrain them can lead to — in the Izvestia material.
What is harmful to the eardrum
The habit of pinching your nose when sneezing is typical for many Russians. Some people think that a loud sneeze is too vulgar, while others do not want to disturb others and attract attention to themselves. But good intentions can turn into health problems.
The ENT organs (the auditory tube, nasal passages, and throat) represent one system. Denis Prokofiev, a general practitioner with the status of "Moscow Doctor," explains that this system has a single pressure that is regulated by various septa and bone labyrinths. If additional pressure is artificially created, for example, the nose is pinched with fingers, then there is an increased load on the physiological barriers.
— By the way, this is one of the reasons why you have to be very, very careful with nasal flushing devices. Such devices can, instead of the positive effect of pumping mucus out of the nasal passages, lead to negative effects — stress on the eardrum and the occurrence of otitis media, explains Dr. Prokofiev.
It is especially not recommended to restrain sneezing when it comes to rhinitis, sinusitis, rhinorrhea, when there is a copious discharge of mucus from the nasal passages. In this case, a protective mechanism works, which is aimed at removing germs and bacteria.
"Coughing is also a reflex that aims to remove a microbial agent or bacterial agent by secreting it with sputum," says the doctor. — This cleanses the respiratory tract. Therefore, when a person tries to suppress a cough, he leaves all the bacteria and microbes inside his body, which leads to their multiplication and the development of diseases.
Cough suppression is possible only if it is residual and does not perform the function of protecting the respiratory tract and lung tissue. But the doctor advises to treat this very carefully too.
The expert also draws attention to the fact that the mechanism of yawning is not fully understood, but it should not be restrained either — this is a physiological need and norm.
— Yawning is a physiological mechanism of our body aimed at eliminating the effects of oxygen starvation, namely hypoxia of the brain, — says Dr. Prokofiev. — In this way, a person tries to capture an additional volume of air, which contains oxygen.
How to show emotions
From the point of view of psychology and psychosomatics, suppression of emotions is harmful to a person's psychological well-being, psychiatrist and psychotherapist Alexey Vilkov explained to Izvestia.
— Negative emotions accumulate inside, create tension. The muscles tighten, and gradually they begin to squeeze the autonomic nerve endings, which can eventually result in pain," comments Alexey Vilkov.
People experience the negative effects of emotional and physical stress in different ways. It's always very subjective and individual.
— Someone has a headache - this is the so—called tension headache. Someone is experiencing discomfort in the chest, in the heart area. Others have stool disorders, abdominal discomfort, and malfunction of peristalsis," explains Vilkov.
Accumulation of negative emotions (especially such as resentment or anger), as well as depressive experiences from the point of view of psychosomatics can increase the risk of cancer. Therefore, the psychiatrist emphasizes that emotions always need an outlet.
— The main thing is that they come out environmentally friendly, safe, without negative impact on loved ones and others. And the best way out of an eco—friendly emotion is in the form of mastering auto—training, meditation practices, yoga, and relaxation," comments Alexey Vilkov.
According to the psychiatrist, if a man or a woman does not show their feelings towards a loved one, they hide them, then this also leads to emotional tension, to tightness. As a result, the risk of anxiety or depressive disorder increases when the mood decreases, apathy, pessimism, and indifference to oneself and others arise. Accumulated emotions, at best, turn into neurosis when a person experiences anxiety and unsuccessfully tries to resolve their internal conflict.
— And sometimes there is an emotional dependence on the object of affection, which also prevents him from living peacefully in harmony with himself, — explains the psychiatrist. — Obsessive thoughts about the object of desire appear when all aspirations are only directed at a man or a woman, which worsens the quality of other aspects of a person's life. And he cannot exist without these thoughts of having an object of love and reciprocity with him.
If it is not possible to convey your feelings to the object of passion, you should seek the help of specialists to help you cope with the unbearable burden.
Hunger changes consciousness
The psychiatrist also advises against ignoring the feeling of hunger, as this is a basic physiological need that needs to be satisfied. A hungry person becomes irritable, and at the same time he has a condition where he simply does not have the strength to do his usual things.
— Or there is also anxiety, a feeling of discomfort, alertness. This happens in any case when some basic need is not satisfied. The brain sends a signal that something needs to be done to satisfy it, otherwise the person will experience negative feelings," the psychiatrist continues.
The suppression of hunger affects not only mental functioning.
— There are two media in the gastrointestinal tract. One of them is aggressive hydrochloric acid, which, being in the stomach, helps to digest food. And the second is the protective mucous layer, which is produced to protect the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract. When their balance is disturbed, exacerbations of gastritis and peptic ulcer of the gastrointestinal tract occur," says a general practitioner.
The balance of the two environments depends, in particular, on proper and regular nutrition. Hydrochloric acid, which is necessary primarily for the breakdown of food, is constantly produced in the stomach. If food does not enter the body, then there is an overabundance of this acid.
"When the balance of gastric juice and the mucous layer is disturbed, the aggressive factor begins to corrode the mucous wall of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to exacerbations of the disease," the expert warns.
Bile is also involved in the digestive process, which is produced even if the gallbladder is removed. Normally, it neutralizes the hydrochloric acid of the gastric contents and enhances the activity of pancreatic enzymes, supports effective digestion. But with improper nutrition, the opposite effect occurs.
— A large accumulation of an aggressive enzymatic substance, which is bile, leads to the fact that the walls of the gastrointestinal tract also corrode and causes the development of biliary pancreatitis, - says Dr. Prokofiev.
Thus, when a person is starving, excess gastric juice and bile will negatively affect the body.
— The feeling of hunger is not only a signal of the predominance of aggressive substances in the gastrointestinal tract. This is an indicator that a person lacks vital foods such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats to ensure the vital functions of the body," adds Denis Prokofiev.
What does fatigue mean?
The psychiatrist believes that suppressing fatigue is also fraught with negative consequences, because it is an additional burden on the body and psyche.
— As a result, emotional burnout increases, and sooner or later symptoms of neurasthenia appear. That is, we are talking about the exhaustion of the nervous system and the psyche. This is manifested in a decrease in cognitive functions, anxiety, apathy, indifference to oneself and others, to one's activities," the psychiatrist warns.
— All body activity is controlled by the central nervous system, namely the brain. And when he gets overloaded, he needs rest, of course. The body signals this need with fatigue. Sometimes a person actually turns off, for example, he may fall asleep at the wheel, warns Denis Prokofiev.
The doctor emphasizes that sleep is vital. When a person sleeps, all processes slow down, and this is enough for the body to recover.
— Fatigue indicates that decomposition products accumulate in the body, there is an overabundance of the central nervous system. Therefore, it is necessary to listen to the signals and try to normalize the regime of vigor and sleep," the general practitioner comments.
If fatigue remains after a full rest, then you need to take a general blood test, do an ECG and exclude those pathologies that prevent the body from functioning normally, the expert says.
