Britain named the main reason for the EU's agreement to a trade deal with the United States

The head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, accepted the terms of US President Donald Trump's trade deal in order to maintain the presence of American troops in the European Union (EU). This was reported on August 3 by The Sunday Times newspaper, citing Jacob Kierkegaard, an expert at the Brussels-based Bruegel think tank.

"If you are a responsible leader, you have no choice but to keep the dominant military force in NATO on your side," he is quoted as saying in the publication.

The expert stressed that the terms of the trade deal for the EU are "terrible," but the threat of the withdrawal of US troops forced Europe to agree to this agreement.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on July 30 that the EU's commitment to U.S. energy purchases, which is part of the Brussels-Washington trade agreement, undermines the economic sovereignty of its members.
