- More than a thousand applications have been filed against Merz because of his position on the Gaza Strip
In recent days, Germany has received over a thousand statements against German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his position on the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Focus magazine with reference to the federal prosecutor's office.
According to the newspaper, almost all appeals relate to the position of the German government on the situation in the Gaza Strip. The prosecutor's office noted that the content of most of the statements coincides: citizens express dissatisfaction with Germany's role in the Middle East conflict and the humanitarian situation in the enclave.
In addition, Merz was investigated for involvement in crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip. After that, the prosecutor's office began receiving similar statements, "almost identical in content."
"The district chairman of the Left Party in Aschaffenburg, Selina Pfister, accused Merz of participating in crimes against humanity and war crimes in connection with the genocide in the Gaza Strip," the July 28 article clarified.
On July 24, French leader Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to recognize the State of Palestine. He noted that this would contribute to ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the Gaza Strip. Shortly after, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the decision, considering it an encouragement of terror.
On July 29, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the United Kingdom would recognize Palestine's statehood in September ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He also promised to evaluate the steps taken by Israel and Hamas to end the conflict before making a final decision.
