The US decision to withdraw from the specialized agency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was expected. This was announced on July 22 by the organization's CEO Audrey Azoulay.

According to her, the organization has prepared for such a step by Washington. Azoulay stressed that the decision would not affect UNESCO's work at this stage. She also clarified that the organization is not considering the possibility of cuts.

In addition, the CEO noted that the relevant decision by the American side contradicts the fundamental principles of multilateralism, and may also affect numerous partners in the United States. In her statement, Azoulay highlighted UNESCO's work on Holocaust education and the fight against anti-Semitism.

"[UNESCO's work] was unanimously approved by major specialized organizations such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., the World Jewish Congress and its American Section, as well as the American Jewish Committee," The Times of Israel newspaper quoted her statement.

Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from UNESCO. According to him, the organization allegedly supports cultural and social issues that incite discord.
