German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has acknowledged the failure of the migration policy of former German Prime Minister Angela Merkel, which led to the migration crisis both in Germany and throughout Europe. This was reported by the Handelsblatt newspaper on Friday, July 18.

"10 years later, today we know that we obviously have not been successful in the area that she (Angela Merkel. — Ed.) I had in mind," said Merz.

This is how Merz commented on a journalist's question about Merkel's statement in 2015, when, speaking in the Bundestag, she stated: "We can do this," referring to the integration of refugees. However, the Chancellor also made it clear that he supports the immigration of highly qualified specialists into the labor market.

"Germany is a country of immigration, we've actually been one for decades, maybe even more than 100 years or longer," Merz added.

On July 4, it was reported that the Federal Minister of the Interior of Germany, Alexander Dobrindt, is looking for allies in Europe to tighten the EU's migration policy and, in this regard, plans to convene a summit of the interior ministers of the union countries on July 18. It was clarified that Dobrindt invited the interior ministers of France, Poland, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic, as well as EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Magnus Brunner.
