Russians preferred short weekend trips this summer
This summer, Russians began to go on short trips lasting one to three days more often. As analysts of the fintech company Humopeu and the hotel booking service from 2GIS Othello found out, most preferred mini-trips on weekends, most often to a neighboring region. The results of the study were reviewed by Izvestia on July 17.
According to analysts, 60% of Russians regularly made short trips in the summer, 48% of them did it once or twice a month, and 12% - almost every week. Traveling by private car within the nearest regions has become the main format. Only 2% of the respondents traveled abroad, while 1% stayed within the city limits.
"Russians choose frequent mini-trips for one to three days and do it three times more actively than a year ago," the study says.
Most often, short trips are made on weekends: 78% of Russians surveyed do this, 57% of them leave on Friday. The second most popular holidays are May, June and November: 48% of respondents choose them for short trips. Weekdays remain the least popular time, but 8% of respondents prefer them for short trips.
According to analysts, the main part of expenses on such trips is gasoline and travel (51%), followed by snacks on the road (45%), followed by cafes and restaurants (35%), as well as accommodation (30%).
At the same time, the majority of tourists tried to control their budget: 37% estimated their expenses roughly, 18% had a clear plan, and 25% did not limit themselves and spent according to the situation. Only 35% had no unforeseen expenses. Spontaneous purchases and snacks, visits to cafes, as well as souvenirs and gastronomic delicacies were the leaders among sudden expenses.
It is specified that the most popular mode of transport was a private car: 49% of the survey participants chose it. Trains and commuter trains are also popular (26%), while only a few (1%) used carsharing.
"Almost half of the respondents (49%) said they got to their destination in five hours or less, 23% in three hours or less. But some respondents made trips lasting about 12 hours or more — such 9%," the article says.
The growth of tourism is also reflected in transaction data: for the entire weekend of June 2025, including holidays, the number of payments for tourist services in Russia increased by 60% compared to June 2024. At the same time, the average check decreased by 26%, which indicates an increase in the availability and frequency of trips.
There was also an increase in demand for commuter trains (+11%), buses (three times), and air tickets (+16%). In addition, as analysts have revealed, interest in entertainment categories has also grown: cinema tickets were more actively bought (an increase of almost three times), entertainment events (+57%), amusement parks (+53%). There was a noticeable increase in interest in cafes and restaurants (+47%), and the turnover of souvenir shops increased by 18%.
"This creates a dynamically developing market for affordable tourism, where every weekend can become a small adventure," the experts concluded.
The report of the geospatial data analysis platform Geocursor from VK Predict, which was reviewed by Izvestia on June 24, states that in the first five months of 2025, the number of travelers in Russia increased by 22% compared to the same period last year. According to the analysis, the most active travelers are residents of the two capitals (a quarter of the tourist flow from all Russians): Muscovites — 16.3%, residents of St. Petersburg - 9%.
