If Ukraine joins the European Union (EU), German taxpayers may face spending a significant portion of their contributions on Kiev's needs. This was stated on July 10 by the leader of the SSV party, Sarah Wagenknecht, in an interview with the Berliner Zeitung newspaper.

"Another point that Wagenknecht categorically opposes is Ukraine's planned accession to the EU. In her opinion, this would be a mistake that would turn the country into a "bottomless pit for German taxpayers," the publication notes.

In addition, the politician opposed the provision of financial assistance to Kiev at the present time. She also said that a significant part of the previously allocated €72 billion of European aid to Ukraine was lost in "shadow corruption channels."

Earlier, on July 1, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine should not join the European Union (EU) under the accelerated program, despite the plans of Brussels. He stressed that Montenegro had been waiting for about 15 years to join the bloc, but had not received an invitation even if the conditions and criteria for joining the EU were met.
