Every year, on July 12, Orthodox believers celebrate the Day of Remembrance of the Apostles Peter and Paul, a holiday filled with love, respect for faith and hope for heavenly help. Read the Izvestia article about how the service is going, and what prayers to address to the saints.

How do the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul help

The Apostles Peter and Paul are key figures in the history of Christianity. Their fates are very different. Peter, a simple fisherman, a witness to many of the events described in the Gospel, the first disciple of Christ, who was with him throughout his earthly ministry, symbolizes unshakeable faith, protection from temptation, and help in personal and professional difficulties.

Paul, on the other hand, is a brilliantly educated philosopher and preacher, a Pharisee and a pagan who was not one of the apostles during Jesus' lifetime, but who realized the truth of Christianity, embodies the power of repentance, spiritual insight and missionary inspiration.

Despite their different paths of life, the apostles are revered on the same day for their spiritual firmness and diligence in instructing believers. Therefore, prayers to Peter and Paul are especially powerful when a person is looking for inner stability, support and protection from life shocks.

How is the service on Peter and Paul Day?

Saints Peter and Paul's Day is one of the great church holidays. On July 12, Divine liturgies are held in Orthodox churches, concluding St. Peter's Fast, which in 2025 lasts from June 16 to July 11.

Worship on this day is characterized by a special mood and gratitude for spiritual purification. The service begins early in the morning — the apostolic letters are read, telling about the life and exploits of Peter and Paul, excerpts from the Gospel are heard. The sermons of the clergy emphasize the power of repentance, personal sacrifice, and the importance of finding a spiritual path.

The liturgy ends with a prayer service, where special attention is paid to the parishioners' requests for help and intercession. Believers traditionally begin prayer at the icons of the apostles. At this point, it is important to let go of the outside and focus on the inside.

If it is not possible to visit the temple, you can pray at home. The time of prayer reading is not important, the main thing is personal presence in this spiritual act. Many people pronounce the text twice, emphasizing the meaning of each line.

What should Peter and Paul pray for?

Saints Peter and Paul are considered not only pillars of Christianity, but also intercessors in earthly matters, so requests to the apostles can relate to a variety of areas.

Peter, a former fisherman, is considered the patron saint of labor and craft. He is asked for well-being at work, stability, as well as for preserving his home and family, getting rid of fear, and strengthening his courage and determination.

Those who seek knowledge or start an important business pray to the Apostle Paul. His life path is an example of how a rethink and a spiritual turn can change fate. Therefore, the apostle is asked for enlightenment of the mind, successful education, guidance in faith, and finding the right direction in life.

Both apostles are perceived as spiritual mentors who can alleviate the most difficult periods of life. They provide special protection to those who feel a loss of spiritual guidance or face an important choice.

The most frequent petitions are for protection from enemies and spiritual infirmity, strengthening faith, getting rid of doubts and fear, restoring mental strength after losses, helping with studies, work, decision-making, harmony in the family and strengthening marriage, repentance, and finding inner peace.

For those who are at a critical stage in their lives, prayer to Peter and Paul can give the necessary impetus, strengthen the will and guide them on the right path.

The most powerful prayers to the Apostles Peter and Paul

Among the many prayers addressed to Peter and Paul, texts that have been passed down in the church tradition for centuries have a special power. They are read in churches, at home in front of icons, in moments of anxiety or gratitude. For example: "Holy Apostles of Christ, Peter and Paul, guide us on the path of salvation, grant us wisdom in decisions, strength in trials, and peace in our hearts. Pray to the Lord for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith."

A special canon is also read, in which each troparion reflects a facet of the apostles' feat: Peter's steadfastness, Paul's foresight, and common service to faith and love. Believers add personal petitions to their prayers, uttered with sincerity and gratitude.
