Orthodox Christians in Russia celebrate one of the most significant church holidays on July 7 — the Nativity of John the Baptist, a particularly revered saint, next in importance after Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day is also known as the Nativity of John the Baptist. The Catholic and Orthodox Churches celebrate it in different ways, not only because of differences in calendar systems, but also because of centuries-old differences in liturgical traditions. For more information about the history and spiritual meaning of the holiday, see the Izvestia article.

July 7 is the church holiday of the Nativity of John the Baptist

The full name of the holiday is the Nativity of the honorable and glorious prophet, Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John. On this day, Orthodox Christians remember John the Baptist, the prophet who baptized Jesus Christ. The celebration is celebrated annually on the same date, as it belongs to the number of non-recurring holidays.

It is based on an event described in the Gospel: the elderly priest Zachariah and his wife Elizabeth could not have children for many years. However, the couple miraculously had a boy who was destined to become a great prophet.

The celebration falls on the period of St. Peter's Fast, which in 2025 fell on the period from June 16 to July 11. On the day of the Nativity of John the Baptist, according to tradition, believers are allowed to eat fish and seafood dishes. It is also allowed to drink some red wine on this day.

The spiritual meaning of the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist

The feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist has a deep spiritual meaning and occupies a special place in the Christian tradition. It is dedicated to the memory of the miraculous birth of John, the last prophet of the Old Testament and at the same time the first witness and herald of the New Testament.

John the Baptist was chosen by God before he was born: according to the Gospel of Luke, an angel announced to his father Zachariah that he would become the father of a son who would "turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God."

John's birth became a symbol of the fulfillment of God's providence and the beginning of a new spiritual era. His mission was to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, and to call for repentance, spiritual purification, and inner rebirth.

It is no coincidence that he is called the Forerunner, the one who goes before Christ, shows the way and serves as a link between the expectation of the Savior and His appearance to the world. The spiritual meaning of the feast is also expressed in the image of humility, which John himself shows. His famous words, "He must grow, and I must decrease," have become a symbol of true service to God, in which a person retreats into the shadows so that all the light is directed at the Lord.

How is the divine service on the Nativity of John the Baptist?

The Divine service on the Nativity of John the Baptist is performed according to the rules of the great feasts and begins with Vespers on the eve of the celebration. The service is solemn and deeply imbued with memories of the birth of the great prophet.

Special hymns and canons dedicated to the events described in the Gospel of Luke are read in churches. In the evening, an all—night vigil is celebrated, which includes great Vespers with Litia, where special parodies are read - excerpts from the Old Testament anticipating the coming of the Forerunner.

After Vespers, matins are served with the magnification of the saint, and in the morning the Divine Liturgy is celebrated, as on other great holidays. The troparion of the Nativity of John the Baptist is heard in churches, in which he is praised as the prophet and baptist of Christ, as the one who "began preaching in the wilderness of repentance" and prepared the way for the Lord.

At the liturgy, an excerpt from the Gospel of Luke is read, telling about the birth of John, as well as from the apostolic letters, emphasizing the importance of his ministry. In many churches, a water prayer service is held on this day, since John was the godson of the people and is associated with the image of water as a symbol of purification.

Believers bring water to consecrate it, and also place candles in front of the icon of the saint. Babies and pregnant women are especially revered on this day, because John's birth was a miracle for the elderly and infertile Elizabeth, and the Forerunner himself became the patron saint of families and children.

What to pray for on the Nativity of John the Baptist

On the day of the Nativity of John the Baptist, believers turn to the saint with special prayers, asking him for intercession in their most intimate and urgent needs. They turn to him with prayers for the power to leave sinful habits, gain firmness in faith and learn to live according to conscience and the gospel commandments. John the Baptist is also considered a defender of the family and an assistant in creating strong marriages — they especially often pray to him for the healing of infertility, for the gift of children and well-being in the home.

Pregnant women ask for His intercession, they ask for an easy birth, the health of babies and peace of mind. He is also asked about his ability to clearly hear God's call, recognize his mission in life, and not be afraid to tell the truth, even when it is inconvenient.

The Forerunner is revered as a formidable prayer book, capable of protecting from darkness, fear, temptations and false paths. Prayer for the gift of humility and the ability to serve God without pride and striving for glory is of particular importance.: John showed an example of true asceticism, voluntarily retreating before the coming of the Messiah.

On the Nativity of John the Baptist, they remember all those who follow the path of service — clergymen, monks, teachers and mentors, because he was the one who showed the way to others.

"To the Baptist of Christ, preacher of repentance, do not despise me who repents, but, having joined forces with the heavenly host, pray to the Master for me, who am unworthy, despondent, weak and sad, who have fallen into many troubles, burdened with the stormy thoughts of my mind. For I am a den of evil deeds, by no means having an end to sinful custom, for my mind is nailed to earthly things. What will I do? We don't know. And to whom will I run, that my soul may be saved? Therefore, Holy John, grace is given to you by name, for you are before the Lord, according to the Mother of God, the greatest of all those who were born; for you have been vouchsafed to touch the crown of Christ the King, who takes away the sins of the world, the Lamb of God. Pray to him for my sinful soul, that from now on, at the first ten o'clock, I may bear a good burden and accept a reward with the last. To her, the Baptist of Christ, the honorable Forerunner, the extreme prophet, the first martyr in grace, the mentor of fasters and hermits, the teacher of purity, and the neighbor of Christ's friend, I pray to you, I take refuge in you: do not reject me from your intercession, but raise me up, who have fallen into many sins, renew my soul with repentance, as with the second baptism, when You are the ruler of both, who washes away sin with baptism, but cleanses with repentance every filthy deed; cleanse me, who have been defiled by sins, and compel me to enter into the kingdom of heaven. Amen to that."
