In the Sumy region of Ukraine, a soldier stole an armored personnel carrier (APC) and went home to the Poltava region. This was announced on Wednesday, July 9, by the press service of the Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation.
"In January 2025, a military man who served as a driver of special equipment voluntarily left the military unit. Under the pretext of refueling the armored personnel carrier with fuel, he drove an APC from the territory of the unit, taking a machine gun with him and headed home to Poltava region," the department's Telegram channel said.
It is specified that the court found the fugitive guilty of desertion and sentenced him to 7 years in prison. The stolen armored personnel carrier and weapons were returned to the military unit.
On July 7, it was reported that in Ukraine, in the first five months of 2025, 90.5 thousand criminal proceedings were registered for the unauthorized abandonment of a unit (SOC). It was clarified that the number of reports of desertion in the Unified Register of Pre—Trial Investigations of Ukraine (ERDR) is distributed as follows: January — 18.1 thousand, February — 17.8 thousand, March — 16.3 thousand, April - 18.3 thousand, May — 19.9 thousand.
