The agreement with US President Donald Trump will result in the European Union (EU) facing higher duties than the UK. This was reported on July 9 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"EU representatives are approaching the conclusion of a trade agreement with Donald Trump, which will consolidate higher tariffs than those provided to the UK. These are the dividends from Brexit, which have alarmed some European capitals," the article says.

It is specified that Brussels is ready to sign a "framework" agreement, which assumes "mutual" tariffs of 10% from the United States for the duration of the negotiations. According to the publication, this corresponds to the base tariff set for the UK. One of the diplomats called this reduction a success.

At the same time, the informed diplomats conveyed that the European Union does not expect to get the same access to the American market as British steel, cars and other goods that are subject to industry duties.

FT emphasizes that without an agreement, tariffs on EU goods will rise to 20 or 50% from August 1 after Trump postponed the deadline to July 9.

The day before, Bloomberg reported on the intention of the European Union to conclude a trade agreement with the United States on the condition of a 10% tariff on exports, before they increase to 50% on August 1. It was clarified that the EU expects lower rates in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, alcohol, semiconductors and commercial aircraft.
