On two wheels: sales of motorcycles in Russia increased by 15% in the first half of the year%
Against the background of declining sales of new cars, the motorcycle market is showing good growth. The increased interest in motorcycles is accompanied by an increase in the number of issued driver's licenses of the appropriate category. However, not all bike buyers register them with the State Traffic Inspectorate. Details can be found in the Izvestia article.
Bikes against cars
In the first half of the year, 28.5 thousand new motorcycles and ATVs were sold in Russia. This was announced by Sergey Tselikov, General Director of the Autostat analytical agency, based on the number of issued EPTS. This is 15% more than in the first six months of last year (24.8 thousand copies). At the same time, car sales in Russia decreased by 26% over the same six months.
Most of all (20.4 thousand units) from January to June, Russians purchased motorcycles with an engine capacity of up to 400 cc. The leaders in this segment were three Russian brands that assemble bikes from Chinese components. The most popular brand was Regulmoto (5,680 units, +30% compared to the first six months of last year. Racer is in second place (2516), which slightly worsened its position (-6%). Motoland's bronze medal is 2,391 motorcycles (+22%).
In the segment of bikes with 400-799 cc engines, Asian manufacturers took the prizes. On the first line with the result of 1069 motorcycles is the Chinese Voge, which increased its sales by 23%. The second place belongs to the Indian company Royal Enfield, whose motorcycles sold 607 units (immediately +263%). Sales of Benda bikes, another motorcycle brand from China, increased by 303% to 463 units.
A significant increase in sales of Royal Enfield and Benda is associated with the effect of a low base, experts say. The companies appeared on our market recently and last year large quotas for supplies were not allocated to Russia, as a result of which the number of motorcycles of these brands sold was small, they explain.
BMW models are the leaders among motorcycles with engines of more than 800 cc (577 units, +26%). This is followed by the "American classics" — Harley-Davidson (342 motorcycles; +2%). Voge closes the top three, having sold 299 "high-volume" cars (+415%). It is noteworthy that the leaders in this segment of motorcycles have not been officially supplied to Russia for more than three years. All BMW and Harley-Davidson cars sold were imported to our market through alternative channels.
Since the beginning of the year, a total of more than 80,000 motorcycles have been imported to Russia. At the same time, Sergei Tselikov notes, not all of them were registered with the State Traffic Inspectorate.
— The import of motor vehicles is almost three times higher than the volume that is registered on the road. In six months, more than 80 thousand units of motor vehicles were imported to Russia. And only 28.5 thousand were registered," he said.
Switch to two wheels
The trend towards a noticeable increase in interest in motorcycles has been noted for several years, motorcycle expert Roman Sitnikov told Izvestia. This is largely due to the greater affordability of such equipment compared to cars, he stressed.
— Now, having a conditional half a million rubles, it is impossible to purchase a more or less decent car. And it is quite realistic to buy a bike with good characteristics and very decent quality for this amount. Moreover, there are offers for 300-350 thousand rubles. As a result, instead of a car, a person buys a motorcycle for himself, and in the winter season, if necessary, he uses, for example, carsharing," Roman Sitnikov told Izvestia.
Bikes are not a "clean" alternative for cars, says Ivan Vladimirov, chief gear editor of Moto magazine. At the same time, he agrees that the increase in sales of motorcycles is primarily due to its relative availability.
— If you look at the sales statistics, most of them are the simplest models with an engine capacity of up to 200-250 cubic meters. They are not very expensive and therefore in demand," said Ivan Vladimirov.
They are not registered, but in a warehouse
The difference between the number of imported and registered motorcycles can be explained by the fact that a lot of them were imported this winter, says the editor-in-chief of the magazine "Moto". At the same time, the main sales of motorcycles occurred in March, April and partly in May, he notes. According to him, in June, "the market stood up, motorcycle dealerships are literally packed."
Nevertheless, there is a problem of non-registration of motorcycles, Ivan Vladimirov admits. First of all, it concerns the most affordable models and is more typical for regions, he notes.
— A person buys a motorcycle to go fishing in the village, to the forest for mushrooms, or just for fun. Few of these buyers take it to the State Traffic Inspectorate. After all, after that you will have to buy a CTP, pay a transport tax — few people do this in remote villages and villages," he told Izvestia.
Roman Sitnikov agrees with him. According to him, it is quite difficult to use an unregistered bike in large cities, but in the regions such a problem really exists, he noted.
Traffic police are not asleep
The State Traffic Inspectorate continuously monitors compliance with traffic regulations by motor vehicle drivers and, in case of violations, including those related to the operation of such equipment that is not registered in accordance with the established procedure, takes administrative measures against violators provided for by law, Colonel Colonel of the Department of Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child Traffic Injuries of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia told Izvestia. police officer Sergey Hrantskevich. At the same time, preventive work is regularly carried out among motor transport drivers aimed at preventing them from violating traffic regulations, aggressive and dangerous driving on two-wheeled vehicles, he stressed.
— However, as practice shows, motor vehicles are often driven by children and teenagers who do not have a driver's license of the appropriate category, often without a helmet and protective equipment. Such trips very often end in tragedies — according to statistics, more than 80% of the children and teenage drivers who died in the first five months of this year were driving motorcycles," Sergei Hrantskevich told Izvestia.
The State Traffic Inspectorate emphasizes that to drive a moped or scooter, you need an M-category driver's license, which can be obtained by persons over the age of 16 after studying at a driving school and successfully passing exams. Motorcycle driving requires a category A license, which is also issued to persons at least 18 years old after studying at a driving school and passing exams. For driving a moped, scooter, or motorcycle without a license of the appropriate category, a fine of 5,000 to 15,000 rubles is provided, while the vehicle is delayed and placed in a specialized parking lot. In addition, the fine for transferring control of a vehicle to a child is 30 thousand rubles. Their parents or legal representatives are responsible for teenagers under the age of 16 who were driving vehicles, the State Traffic Inspectorate reminds.
— To avoid a tragedy, parents need to strengthen control over the leisure time of teenagers, as well as the availability of vehicles for them, including motor vehicles. Do not leave the keys to cars and motor vehicles in the children's access area, thereby allowing for the possibility of a dangerous trip. And, of course, it is completely unacceptable to buy motorcycles for your children, including pit bikes, as a reward for good studies or as a gift," Sergey Hrantskevich emphasized.
