Spring break: motorcycle sales almost doubled before the season

In February–March 2025, motorcycle sales increased 1.7 times compared to the same period last year, marketplaces told Izvestia. The average cost of a vehicle in 2025 varies depending on the site — from 200 thousand to 240 thousand rubles. Sellers are waiting for an even greater increase in demand closer to the start of the motorcycle season — this year the opening is scheduled for the end of April — May. See the Izvestia article about which motorcycles are currently popular on the market and how to prepare for the season.
How motorcycle sales are growing
Sales of motorcycles in the run-up to the season have almost doubled compared to last year, representatives of marketplaces and sales aggregators told Izvestia.
According to analysts at JVO Studio, motorcycle sales at Wildberries increased one and a half times in late February —March 2025. A separate category for the sale of these vehicles appeared on the site in September 2024.
In the second half of March, the number of sales announcements began to increase dramatically, said Daria Pritupova, product manager of the Mototekhnika all-Russian automobile website Drom.
"Most likely, there will be a significant increase in the next ten days," she told Izvestia. — The data from the current ad base last month is indicative, when the growth was 104% by February 2024. At the same time, on average, 26% more ads were submitted per day in February this year than a year ago.
The increased interest in motorcycles is also confirmed by data from the Autostat agency, Daria Pritupova added. In 2024, 43 thousand new motorcycles were purchased, which is 58% more than in 2023. For used models, these figures show an increase of 10%.
The average cost of motorcycles on marketplaces is 219-253.7 thousand rubles, and the average purchase receipt in this category of vehicles is 202 thousand rubles.
So, according to JVO, the largest share of sales at Wildberries belongs to the Russian brand Rockot — 49% of the entire category. The average cost of a motorcycle of this brand is 189 thousand rubles. In second place are Chinese Regulmoto with a share of 29% and an average cost of 226 thousand rubles. The second and third places went to MotoLand (made in China) and Promax (Taiwan)— accounting for 3.9 and 3.2% of all sales. Kayo (China) closes the top 5 with an indicator of 1% and an average motorcycle cost of 197 thousand rubles.
At Ozon in February–March 2025, users most often preferred vehicles from Regulmoto — 26% of all sales. Their average cost was 214 thousand rubles. MotoLand brand came in second place with a share of 19%. Next comes VMC (China), motorcycles of this brand accounted for 9.2% of all vehicles sold. Next is the BSE brand (China) — 8.9%.
In the used motorcycle market, the Japanese three are ahead of the standard: Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, Daria Pritupova noted.
— Next are the Kawasaki and BMW models, — the expert explained. — Of course, the Chinese are the leaders in the new brand structure: Regulmoto, Racer, MotoLand and Voge. But the Indian model from Bajaj is also popular.
Chinese brands, she says, are mostly inexpensive. That's why sales of new such vehicles are growing especially fast.
"For example, the top-selling Racer RC300 model can be purchased for 150,000 rubles, which is a fairly low threshold for purchasing new equipment," the expert believes. — If you look at the current state of the current fleet of motorcycles in Russia, the models that were in our grandfathers' garage are still in the top: IZH, Ural, ZID. The Japanese and Chinese have not even reached the top 5 brands yet.
How to prepare for the season
The demand for motorcycles is growing every year, Vyacheslav, an experienced motorcyclist, told Izvestia.
"Winter is the best time to buy motorcycles," he said. — But it is important to prepare the motorcycle for departure after the seasonal break.
The first step is to check the battery charge, otherwise problems may arise at the most unexpected moment, Vyacheslav emphasized.
— Replace the oil and all liquids according to the user's instructions, — the expert added. — I recommend buying liquids from renowned manufacturers in well-known stores or in motorcycle service stations. This way it is less likely that a fake will be filled in.
The second stage is to check the chains, belts, and gimbal, depending on the type of torque transmission used.
— I recommend changing the chain with stars every 20-25 thousand km or every two seasons. Also, do not forget to clean it, lubricate it and check the tension, thereby you will prolong its service life," he said. — The same criteria for checking the drive belt. Its service life is longer, but I recommend checking it every 5 thousand km. With a gimbal, on the one hand, everything is simple and difficult at the same time: you can change the oil once and forget about it for the entire time of operation. Or it may happen that it will fall apart in the first 5 thousand km.
Next, according to Vyacheslav, it is necessary to deal with rubber. According to the rules of the road, the minimum remaining tread is 0.8 mm: that is, the smaller the pattern, the greater the chance of "catching aquaplaning" (complete or partial loss of tire grip on a hard road surface).
"And don't forget to check the tire pressure according to the motorcycle manual," he explained. — It is also worth checking the brake discs and pads. If the pads have a working surface thickness of less than 2 mm, they need to be replaced. The last step is to lubricate the clutch and throttle cables a little.
The expert reminded novice motorcyclists that in wet weather they should beware of hitting road markings and rails. On the road, it is important to look and assess the situation two cars ahead.
— I also recommend looking into the side mirrors of motorists in order to make sure that they see you, — Vyacheslav pointed out.
The most dangerous time to ride a motorcycle is when the sun is shining in the back — a car driver in the same situation may not see the motorcyclist in the side mirror, the expert warned.
