An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 was recorded off the eastern coast of the island of Tongatapu, the largest in the Kingdom of Tonga. This was announced on July 7 on the website of the Australian State Geological Bureau.

It is noted that the first tremors were noted at 20:31 UTC (23:21 Moscow time). The seismic event occurred 69 km from Fuaamotu International Airport, located 35 km from the capital of the state, the city of Nuku'alofa. The population of the city is at least 24 thousand people.

The earthquake was centered at a depth of 52 km. There was no information about casualties, damage, or the threat of a tsunami.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia a day earlier. It was clarified that its epicenter was located 90 km northwest of the city of Banda Aceh, where at least 250 thousand people live.
