During a meeting on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala discussed the need for reforms in the organization. This was reported on July 7 on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The need for urgent WTO reform based on the principles of inclusivity, non—discrimination, transparency and mutual respect was confirmed," the publication says.

It is specified that Lavrov and Okonjo-Iweala exchanged views on some aspects of cooperation between the Russian side and the WTO secretariat.

At the plenary session of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated the need to step up cooperation between the BRICS countries in the fields of technology, resource development, logistics, trade, and finance. He noted that by creating an independent settlement and depository system within the framework of the association, it will be possible to make currency transactions faster, more efficient and safer.
