The BRICS countries account for not only a third of the earth's land area and almost half of the world's population, but also 40% of the global economy. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking via video link at the XVII summit of the group, which is currently taking place in Brazil. The Head of State called for further expansion of the use of national currencies in mutual settlements, noting that their use in trade between the BRICS countries is steadily increasing. In addition, he proposed to multiply the volume of counter-investments, including through the New Development Bank. The strengthening of the role of the BRICS institutions and who Sergey Lavrov met on the sidelines of the summit can be found in the Izvestia article.

Vladimir Putin's participation in the BRICS summit

The country has prepared thoroughly for the main event of the Brazilian BRICS presidency. In Rio de Janeiro, where the meeting of the heads of the association countries is taking place on July 6-7, Monday has been declared a day off. In addition, the authorities ordered to strengthen security in the city — according to the local press, more than 20 thousand people are involved in its provision.

Police escorted each delegation throughout the summit, from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the Museum of Modern Art, where the main BRICS events are taking place. The airspace of Rio de Janeiro, in turn, is controlled by the Brazilian Air Force with the help of fighter jets. And the Santos Dumont Airport, located near the summit venue, was closed on July 6 and 7.

From 9:30 a.m. on July 6, the guests of the BRICS summit were greeted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The first event in the program is a plenary session with the participation of the member States of the association entitled "Peace, Security and global Governance reform". Only five States, including Brazil, were represented at the level of their heads. Vladimir Putin took part in the summit via video link.

BRICS has rightfully established itself among the key centers of global governance, and its solid voice in support of the fundamental interests of the global majority is increasingly being heard in the international arena, the Russian president said in his speech.

— The process of changing the global economic structure continues to gain momentum. Everything indicates that the model of liberal globalization is becoming obsolete, the center of business activity is shifting towards emerging markets, which is launching a powerful wave of growth, including in the BRICS countries. In order to make the most of the prospects opening up in this regard, it is important to step up cooperation between the member states of our association, primarily in such areas as technology, efficient resource development, logistics and insurance, trade and finance," said Vladimir Putin.

He made a number of proposals for the development of the association. First, he called for further expansion of the use of national currencies in mutual settlements. The creation of an independent settlement and depository system on the BRICS platform will make currency transactions faster, more efficient and safer, the Russian leader is confident. At the same time, the use of national currencies in trade between the BRICS countries is steadily growing: in 2024, the share of the ruble and the currencies of friendly countries in Russia's settlements with other BRICS countries was 90%.

Secondly, Russia considers it important for the member countries of the association to increase the volume of mutual investments, including through the BRICS mechanisms and, first of all, the New Development Bank.

— To this end, Russia has proposed to form a new BRICS investment platform. We are talking about jointly developing agreed tools to support and attract funds from the economies of our countries and the countries of the Global South and East," Vladimir Putin said.

Other Latin American countries are showing interest in the New BRICS Development Bank, Alexander Shchetinin, director of the Latin American Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Izvestia. Earlier, Columbia joined the institute.

— There is certainly interest in the New Development Bank as a financial institution. All decisions on inviting a country to become a member of the bank are made by the relevant authorities of the member States, the founders of the bank, and the members of the bank. And in this vein, they consider individual invitations, the interest of a particular country. Of course, Latin American countries are more actively participating in the institutions being formed by the BRICS, including financial and economic ones. This is a positive trend related to the awareness by the countries of the Global South of the new place of this group, the world majority, which reflects the current trends and realities taking place in the modern world," the diplomat told Izvestia.

The Final Declaration of the BRICS Summit

Over the years, BRICS has become a serious association. As the Russian president noted, the group's countries account for not only a third of the earth's land area and almost half of the world's population, but also 40% of the global economy, and the total GDP at purchasing power parity, according to the latest IMF data, already reaches $77 trillion.

"By the way, in this indicator, the BRICS significantly surpasses some other associations, including the Group of Seven, with $57 trillion there," Vladimir Putin noted.

The declaration of unification also speaks about the new role of BRICS on the world stage. Thus, the document focuses on the conflict in Ukraine. The leaders condemned the Ukrainian attacks on railway tracks and bridges in the Kursk, Bryansk and Voronezh regions on May 31, June 1 and June 5. They expressed hope that the current efforts on Ukraine will lead to a sustainable peaceful settlement. Moscow and Kiev held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, despite Ukraine's constant provocations.

Special attention was paid to Iran. The summit participants condemned the military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities carried out by Israel and the United States. Of particular concern were the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.

The declaration also talks about the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. According to the document, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank of Jordan should be united into the State of Palestine under the authority of the Palestinian National Administration. The leaders of the BRICS countries also called on the participants in the negotiations on Gas to achieve an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Finally, the countries reaffirmed their support for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council. The participants supported "the legitimate aspirations of developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, including the BRICS countries, to play a more significant role in international affairs, in particular in the UN, including its Security Council."

The BRICS countries represent the global majority and take a clear position on global conflicts. It is directed against Western countries and their accomplices. This solidarity shows that, despite cultural differences and often differences in interests, countries are united in defending positions on behalf of the global majority. Vladimir Shapovalov, Deputy Director of the Institute of History and Politics at Moscow State University, told Izvestia about this.

Who did Sergey Lavrov meet at the BRICS summit?

The Russian delegation at the Rio de Janeiro summit was led by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. His plane landed in Brazil early in the morning on July 6. The license plate of the car used by the head of Russian diplomacy is covered with a sticker with the symbols of the summit and the inscription in Russian "We are Russia! We are Lavrov!" The Russian Foreign Minister also took part in photographing the heads of delegations.
