On June 29, the Seventh Symphony by composer Dmitry Shostakovich was performed during the main alumni celebration "Scarlet Sails" in St. Petersburg. A musical piece dedicated to the lifting of the siege of Leningrad and the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War (WWII) was performed by a choir and orchestra, conducted by Nikola Melnikov.

Archival photographs from the time of the Second World War were shown on the screen during the sound of the symphony. The combination of music and historical footage reminded of the connection of generations, the tragedy of the last war, the heroism and hardships of the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad.

Shostakovich wrote the Seventh Symphony at the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, continued to work in harsh conditions, during the blockade and evacuation, until finally the finished work was performed for the first time in the Great Hall of the Leningrad Conservatory on August 9, 1942.

The main alumni celebration "Scarlet Sails" was held in St. Petersburg on the night of June 29. The ceremony began with a welcoming speech by the Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov. And the band "5UTRA" opened the festive concert of the event.

The evening culminated with the passage of the brig Rossiya along the Neva River under scarlet sails and the volleys of real Katyusha launchers (BM-13), which are part of the water and pyrotechnic show of the holiday.

Performers Zara, Bearwolf, Akmal', The 5UTRA group, The Hatters, Agatha Christie and Ivanushki International performed at the event. The headliner this year was People's Artist of Russia Nadezhda Kadysheva.

The Scarlet Sails holiday was revived in 2005 after a long-term hiatus on the initiative of ROSSIYA Joint Stock Bank, the Government of St. Petersburg and Channel Five.
