Members of the Azerbaijani diaspora are being detained in Yekaterinburg in connection with the investigation of criminal cases of murders committed in previous years. This was announced on June 28 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in response to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, which called for an investigation into the actions of Russian law enforcement officers.

She noted that the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Sverdlovsk Region had already commented on the situation.

"As part of the investigation of criminal cases into serious crimes committed in previous years, Russian law enforcement agencies conducted detentions and searches at the places of residence of suspects who are citizens of the Russian Federation and natives of Azerbaijan," Zakharova replied on the agency's website.

In addition, Pyotr Volokov, Charge d'affaires of the Russian Embassy in the country, who was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, also spoke about the incident. He explained the situation and assured that it was under the control of law enforcement agencies. In the future, other details will be made public by the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Zakharova added.

On June 28, the Investigative Committee of Russia reported that the activities of an ethnic criminal group, whose members are suspected of a number of murders and attempted murders in recent years, had been suppressed in the Sverdlovsk region. According to investigators, the defendants were involved in crimes in Yekaterinburg committed in 2001, 2010 and 2011. Several suspects confessed.
