- Matvienko did not rule out the restoration of relations between Russia and Europe in the near future

Relations between Russia and Europe can be restored in the near future, taking into account historical ties and mutual interests. This was stated on June 28 by Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko at a meeting with participants of the cultural and educational project "Train of Memory" in the Tauride Palace of St. Petersburg.
"I am absolutely convinced that relations between Russia, Europe and other countries will be restored. We are neighbors, we live on the same continent, and we cannot escape each other," Matvienko said.
She stressed that the first step should be taken by the very European leadership that initiated the confrontation. Europe, according to Matvienko, hurt itself first of all when it severed ties with the Russian Federation.
Matvienko added that the Russian economy is showing steady growth, low unemployment remains in the country and all social obligations are being fulfilled. At the same time, she said, prices for utilities and electricity are rising in Europe, living standards are declining, and voters are voting against the policy.
"Europe is certainly important for Russia, but Russia is no less important for Europe, not only because we have been supplying gas, oil and other resources for decades. We are connected by culture, faith, and joint science," Matvienko emphasized.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on June 22 that the United States and Europe needed a global "reset", and Western politicians had made a huge number of mistakes. She noted that the words of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the need to increase defense spending and the alleged threat from Russia indicate that Western elites need to present something to their population as an explanation for economic problems.
