- The media pointed to the threat to NATO's defense strengthening plans due to a shortage of resources.

The European Union's plans to expand its defense capabilities are under threat due to a shortage of critically important mineral resources in the countries of the union. This was announced on June 27 by the Euractiv portal.
"[Mineral] resources have significantly influenced modern military technologies and will continue to shape the future of military readiness in the air, at sea and in space," the publication says.
It clarifies that NATO's plans are under threat due to China's almost complete monopoly on rare earths and Russia's control over other important raw materials.
According to the portal, these resources are necessary to create modern types of weapons and equipment, including high-precision ammunition and night vision devices.
"Although Brussels is investing money in domestic mining, it is still far from meeting the needs of its army and industry for mineral resources," the portal added.
At the June 25 summit, NATO countries confirmed their intention to raise defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP). It is noted that the members of the alliance are going to review the balance and direction of investments in 2029, taking into account the strategic situation and the updated goals of the military bloc.
