Through the efforts of the North Atlantic Alliance, the Baltic Sea region, which has remained militarily stable for decades, has become a zone of confrontation between NATO and Russia. This opinion was expressed on June 25 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko at the OSCE annual Security Review Conference.

According to him, the alliance has come up with ideas to turn the Baltic into an "internal sea of NATO." Similar plans, as noted by the deputy Foreign Minister, are being hatched in relation to the Black Sea.

Grushko also pointed out that the aggravation of the military situation is accompanied by increased physical isolation: the borders with the European Union (EU) are wrapped with barbed wire, anti-tank trenches are being dug, mines are being laid, and it is precisely such measures that are now considered the standard of security for the West.

"In Brussels, they hope that multibillion-dollar investments in the military-industrial complex (Military-industrial complex. — Ed.), the militarization of the economy will help bring the EU out of the crisis, but the truth is that Europe itself has abandoned the peace dividend that it has received for decades from energy cooperation with Russia," Grushko is quoted as saying on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

He stressed that the hybrid war launched by the West against Russia has also affected culture and sports.

"We are taking all necessary measures to nullify these Western attempts, and to reliably ensure our legitimate security interests," the diplomat concluded.

The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported on June 8 that NATO military exercises in the Baltic Sea could provoke a conflict with Russia. It was clarified that the annual NATO BALTOPS military exercises this year coincide with the exercises of the Russian Federation, held on the same days and on the same part of the sea. According to the newspaper, such a coincidence risks leading to an escalation in the region.
