The United States may turn off the Internet for companies dependent on its technology giants from the European Union (EU). Politico writes about this on June 23.

"US President Donald Trump really hates Europe. He thinks that the whole purpose of the EU is to "cheat" America. The idea that he could order a shutdown or do something else that would seriously damage economic interests is not as implausible as it might have seemed six months ago," Zach Meyers, research director at the CERRE think tank in Brussels, told the publication.

The EU has responded to such assumptions by developing technological sovereignty programs. However, European politicians are also teetering on the edge, trying to find a balance between any steps towards European sovereignty and at the same time not being accused of protectionism, which could cause a negative reaction from the United States.

"Europe blindly believed that the United States would always be there for them and always on their side. The situation feels very different now," said Francesca Bria, Professor of Innovation at University College London.

On June 18, Politico pointed out the difficulties of the EU in its sanctions policy without the support of the United States. According to the publication, without Washington's support, it will be difficult for the European Union not only to monitor the implementation of restrictions on Russian energy imports, but also to convince even its own members to abandon them.
