Choosing an employer is not only a matter of salary and position, but also a guarantee of professional growth, psychological comfort and other important factors. On June 21, Svetlana Semerenko, a career expert at the Professions of the Future Center, in an interview with Izvestia, named five alarming signals that new employees should pay special attention to.

According to the expert, the first alarming signal is the discrepancy between the promised and actual salary.

"When the contract specifies an amount 20-30% less than the amount announced at the interview, and they offer to receive the difference "in an envelope", this is a deliberate deception on the part of the employer. This scheme allows the company to refuse unofficial payments at any time, leaving the employee with the minimum official salary," Semerenko warned.

The second important indicator of problems in the company is the lack of a well-thought-out system for adapting new employees. If in the first working days they are not provided with a clear plan for taking office and do not explain the criteria for evaluating work, referring to the "dynamic environment" or the need to "immediately get involved in the process," this indicates either the lack of professionalism of the HR service, or the principled position of management, which considers staff training an unnecessary luxury.

The third clear signal of a toxic corporate culture is a motivation system based primarily on punishment.

"In healthy companies, there is a balance between rewards and sanctions. If you are faced with a system of fines for the slightest delay, public scolding for mistakes and constant threats of dismissal, this is a sure sign of a toxic environment where employees are considered expendable," Semerenko said.

The expert also drew attention to the fourth critical marker — high staff turnover, pointing out that the absence of employees in the team who have been working for more than a year and the constant flow of interviews should be considered as a serious warning signal. Of particular concern, according to the expert, is the situation when new employees appear and leave every two to three months. This indicator clearly indicates either unfavorable working conditions or excessive and inadequate requirements on the part of the company's management.

The fifth sign is the gradual discrepancy between the promised and actual job responsibilities.

"At first, you are hired for a specific position with a clear description of the functions, but after a month they begin to gradually load you with related work, and after three months they are generally transferred to completely different tasks. This is a classic tactic of unscrupulous employers, who thus receive a two—in-one for the price of one employee," Semerenko described a common situation.

According to the expert, if you encounter two or more of the described situations, this is a serious reason to think about whether you are ready to put up with such conditions. Remember that the initial stages of adaptation are the most revealing, and what appears to be temporary difficulties often turn out to be a systemic problem of the organization.

The modern labor market offers enough opportunities for professional realization not to compromise.

"It's better to spend extra time looking for a decent employer than to pay for a hasty decision with your own health and professional reputation," Semerenko concluded.

On June 21, Anna Kulysova, brand director of the TDI group of communication agencies, told how to identify "toxic" people at work and gave advice on how to interact with them competently. Kulysova noted that the main task of toxic people in the professional environment is the desire to "undermine" the positions of their colleagues through provocations. At the same time, as the expert explained, there are several types of "toxic behavior."
