Russia is conducting substantive negotiations with business representatives of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) on the construction of floating nuclear power plants. Alexey Likhachev, the head of Rosatom, informed Izvestia about this on June 20.

"Now there is a new stage in the development of these events. We are conducting substantive negotiations with South African businesses on the construction of floating nuclear power plants. <...> We are quite close to making concrete decisions. I must say that we will have the opportunity to localize some of the competencies directly," he said.

Likhachev clarified that we are talking about an upgraded unit based on Ritm-200 reactors. A possible initial pilot project would be a 2+2 supply with a total complexity of 400 megawatts.

"And we are quite close to making concrete decisions. I must say that we will have the opportunity to localize some of the competencies directly in South Africa, construction competencies in the first place," Likhachev said.

Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, during a meeting with South African Vice President Paul Mashatile on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025) on June 20, stated that Russia is interested in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with South Africa in the fields of economy, investment and trade. Matvienko and Mashatile also pointed out the common approaches of the countries on global development issues.
