Zakharova warned of a nuclear threat to the entire Caspian Sea region

The nuclear threat is hanging over the Caspian Sea region, and Russia is doing everything to bring the situation around Iran and Israel back on track. This was stated on June 20 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at the XIX OANA General Assembly within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025).
"We are calling for and doing everything to bring this (the conflict between Iran and Israel — Ed.) back on track for negotiations, realizing the physical threat hanging over the entire region, to which we also belong. The Caspian Sea is there," Zakharova said, as quoted by TASS.
According to her, security in the Caspian Sea is of direct importance for Russia and a number of states with access to it. In addition, Zakharova called for remembering the accident at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant and the consequences it led to, although Japan "had every opportunity" to localize the disaster.
The day before, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the country's Air Force had attacked an inactive nuclear reactor in Arak in Iran, as well as a nuclear weapons development facility in Natanz. In addition, under the leadership of the IDF intelligence agency, 40 fighter jets struck dozens of military targets in Tehran and other areas throughout the Islamic Republic.
The Times of Israel newspaper reported on June 20 that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has information that as a result of Israeli strikes on June 19, key buildings of the Iranian heavy water research site in Khondaba were damaged.
