- The Russian government has updated the borders of the Russian territorial sea in the Baltic
The Government of the Russian Federation has approved a new list of geographical coordinates of points defining baselines for determining the width of the country's territorial sea off the mainland coast and islands in the Baltic Sea. The relevant resolution was published on the legal information portal on June 19.
"The baseline from which the width of the territorial sea of the Russian Federation is measured, <... It is formed by the line of the highest ebb running from the exit point of the line of the land section of the state border of the Russian Federation with the Republic of Lithuania to the exit point of the line of the land section of the state border of the Russian Federation with the Republic of Poland," the text of the resolution says.
It also states that the "Baltic Sea" section of the list of geographical coordinates of points defining the position of baselines for measuring the width of territorial waters, the economic zone and the continental shelf is considered invalid on the territory of Russia. The new list replaced the one previously approved in 1985.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on June 4 that the alliance considers the Black and Baltic Seas as its area of responsibility. According to him, NATO will give a "devastating response" to any unforeseen circumstances in the region.
