Kovalchuk noted the importance of energy for the country's technological leadership
On June 19, Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center (NRC), told students about the importance of energy for the country's technological leadership as part of a tedtok at SPIEF 2025.
"To create a material, you need energy. <...> All AI is pure sublimated electricity," he noted.
Kovalchuk stressed that, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), a third of the electricity produced in the world is spent on maintaining Wi-Fi and Internet networks, without taking into account industrial production. According to him, for example, if there are twice as many users of the ChatGPT neural network, then all the energy generated by the United States will not be enough to service one resource.
"This is a key issue: to create a new material, to create a new process architecture. And then you will have energy efficiency. And whoever wins this race will rule the world. Although we don't give a damn about it. <...> We are so rich that we can spend as much of this energy as we want," concluded Kovalchuk.
In February, Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, said that Russia is a leader in the field of nuclear energy. According to him, in order to maintain its leadership, the country must continue to develop fundamental and applied science in the nuclear industry, as well as train promising young specialists.
