The Leningrad Region is becoming the world's largest center for gas processing and gas chemistry, despite Western anti-Russian sanctions. Izvestia reported this on June 18 on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). the head of the region is Alexander Drozdenko.

He noted that, despite the sanctions, in 2024 alone, the port of Ust-Luga handled 135 million tons of cargo, which was one of the best indicators over the past few years.

"We are becoming the largest hub in Europe, not just Russia, for the transshipment of mineral fertilizers. For example, out of 135 million tons, one third is transshipment of mineral fertilizers, and to distant countries. We send a lot of fertilizers to Brazil," Drozdenko said.

The governor added that on the sidelines of the SPIEF, an agreement was signed with the Por Favor company for 12 million tons of fertilizers and two million tons of ammonia. According to him, by the beginning of the sanctions pressure, the Russian Federation did not have its own port for the shipment of this substance, and because of this, the complete closure of the ammonia business was expected.

However, now, in addition to ammonia, the Leningrad region is actively developing gas chemistry, bringing the region to a leading position in the world.

"We are becoming the largest center not only in Russia, but also in the world for gas processing and gas chemistry. In the Ust-Luga area, the branches of the Nord Streams were included, today they are focused on gas processing. That's why there are many businesses. Today we signed an agreement for 178 billion rubles for deep processing of gas, transportation and shipment," Drozdenko said.

The governor explained that the essence of the project is to divide the extracted "fatty" gas into components. According to him, various products will be produced from what will be separated from the gas: ammonia and much more.

In March, Drozdenko told Russian President Vladimir Putin about the support of ITS participants in the region. According to him, 84 regional support measures are being implemented in the Leningrad region. He added that the authorities are also providing assistance to the children of the special operation participants.
