- The political scientist assessed the scale of the protests in the United States on Trump's birthday

The scale of the protests in the United States, timed to coincide with the birthday of American President Donald Trump, turned out to be significantly smaller compared to the unrest associated with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in 2020. Malek Dudakov, an American political scientist, stated this in an interview with Izvestia on June 16.
"As we can see, indeed, the Democrats tried to arrange a big day of civil disobedience, which coincided with Trump's birthday. <...> At the same time, it must be said that, of course, the scale of the protests does not reach what we observed, for example, during the BLM 2020 mayhem. That is, now, indeed, hundreds of thousands of people have come out all over America, but somehow, in general, it all went without a spark," the expert noted.
Dudakov also expressed doubt that the Democrats will be able to maintain a high level of protest activity in the long term.
In addition, the political scientist pointed out that the unstable situation in the Middle East could support the Democrats, as the growing discontent with Israeli policy among Americans creates the opportunity for new anti-Israeli actions.
"Now, for example, the share of those who support Israel in American society has dropped to 37%. Splits among both Democrats and Republicans, and in this regard, it is impossible to exclude, for example, the beginning of a new wave of large-scale pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli demonstrations, that is, there is such a risk for the Trump administration. We remember how they took place a year ago against [former US President Joe] Biden, and they can, as it were, launch against Trump in the same way. Therefore, there is such a risk of escalation here," he said.
However, Dudakov stressed that the issue of protecting the rights of illegal migrants does not generate widespread support among the population. The majority of Americans consider it necessary to deport them, which casts doubt on the effectiveness of the Democrats' current protest agenda.
On June 14, large-scale rallies against President Trump's migration policy began in the American city of Philadelphia. On the same day, the Virginia State Police detained a man who purposefully crashed into a crowd of protesters opposed to the actions of the American leader. At least one person was injured in the incident.
Mass protests began in California on June 8 after a police raid to identify illegal migrants, during which 45 people were detained. Shortly after, Trump ordered the National Guard to be sent to the state to stop the riots, which was condemned by the governors of 22 states, regarding it as an "abuse of power."
