Ex-CIA analyst pointed to possible strategic defeat of Israel

Israel's operation against Iran's nuclear program is developing successfully, but strategically it may turn into a defeat for it. Larry Johnson, a former analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), told Izvestia on June 13.
"So far, everything is developing very successfully. <... Tactical success, of course, but strategically it is likely to turn into a defeat," he said.
According to Johnson, it is important to take into account that military actions must be accompanied by a political process and negotiations. However, in order to build a dialogue, the parties need to trust each other, the expert noted.
"Why participate in the negotiations now? Dialogue requires trust. The conviction that the other side will fulfill its obligations. And Iran has now made it clear that the United States is an unreliable partner," the former CIA analyst stressed.
He also noted the lack of global support for Israel.
"The world is not lining up to support Israel. No one says, "Good job, well done." On the contrary," Johnson adds.
Israel launched a preemptive strike on Iran and declared a state of emergency across the country earlier in the day. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the purpose of the military operation is to strike at Iran's nuclear infrastructure.
In turn, the American leader Donald Trump called on Iran to conclude a deal after the Israeli attacks. The head of the White House also stressed that Israel has a lot of weapons from the United States and "they know how to use them."
The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli attack and pointed out that the country's move violated the UN Charter. In addition, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that the Russian Federation is concerned and condemns the sharp escalation of tension between Israel and Iran.
