Many gardeners use various fertilizers to obtain a rich harvest. About which of them can harm human health, June 12, "Gazeta.Ru" was told by Andrey Dorokhov, Associate Professor of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry named after A. N. Reformatsky RTU MIREA.

According to the expert, fertilizers with a high content of heavy metals, such as cadmium, are very harmful to human health.

"Prolonged consumption of foods high in cadmium increases the risk of developing kidney and bone diseases," the expert warned.

Excessive use of potassium chloride can destroy the beneficial microflora of the soil, and ammonium nitrate contributes to the accumulation of nitrates in plants.

Dorokhov noted that organic fertilizers can also harm humans.

"If composted improperly, they become a breeding ground for pathogenic microorganisms. This creates a risk of dangerous bacteria, including salmonella, getting into grown vegetables and fruits," the chemist explained.

When choosing fertilizers, you need to pay attention to the availability of certificates of compliance with standards and instructions for the use of fertilizers. Strict compliance with it will minimize the negative impact of fertilizers on human health and the environment.

Earlier, on May 26, agronomist and biologist Mikhail Vorobyov gave advice on saving plants from the heat. To help the plants, the expert recommends that greenhouses and greenhouses be covered in any available way.
