The Baltic Sea is becoming a zone of military confrontation. This was announced on June 10 by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Grushko during a speech at the Forum of the Future — 2050.

"Now, as a result of the artificial confrontation that is being imposed, the demonization of Russia, this region is turning into an arena of military confrontation," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister also warned that the confrontation could at any moment "give sparks from which a flame will ignite" and provoke a conflict. He stressed that he was not exaggerating when talking about the risk of escalation, and pointed to heavy army exercises and military activity in the Baltic region.

The Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano reported on June 8 that NATO military exercises in the Baltic Sea could provoke a conflict with Russia. It was clarified that the annual NATO BALTOPS military exercises this year coincide with the exercises of the Russian Federation, held on the same days and on the same part of the sea. According to the newspaper, such a coincidence risks leading to an escalation in the region.
