Import of new passenger cars to Russia fell by 74%

By the end of May 2025, 17.8 thousand new passenger cars were imported to Russia, which is 74% less than in the last spring month of last year. Compared to April of this year, imports fell by 47%, the analytical agency Autostat reported on June 5.

The import of used cars has exceeded the import of new cars since February (the fourth month in a row). In May, 37.1 thousand used cars were imported, which is 23% more than in May 2024, and almost the same as a month earlier (37.2 thousand units in April).

As analysts explained, the reduction in new car imports is due to the fact that fewer cars of brands such as Chery and Geely began to be imported into the Russian Federation. Since Russia has established the production of cars of a number of foreign brands, their import becomes simply irrelevant, they said.

Changan became the leader in the brand rating among new imported cars, and Toyota became the leader among used cars. The Changan UNI—S and Honda Freed are in the model standings.

Most often, new passenger cars are imported to Russia from China (the share in May was 71.1%), Kyrgyzstan (9.1%) and South Korea (7.2%). Used cars come from Japan (46%), South Korea (24.5%) and China (13.1%), and cars from global brands, not just local brands, are most often imported from China.
