Passenger car sales in Russia fell by 26% in January – May
Sales of new passenger cars in January – May 2025 in Russia amounted to 437.1 thousand units, which is 26% less than in the first five months of last year. This follows from the report prepared by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation. Cars under the age of three are taken into account in the calculations.
In May, 90.7 thousand new passenger cars were sold, which is 28% less year-on-year. Compared to April 2025, their sales decreased by 11%.
In total, 506.5 thousand new vehicles (up to three years) were sold in the Russian Federation in January-May 2025, which is 28% less than in the same period last year (699 thousand units). The market for new cars of domestic production exceeded 277 thousand units, which is 10% less than in January – May 2024.
The market volume in the segment of light commercial vehicles for five months amounted to 41.7 thousand units (-17%), in the segment of trucks — 23.5 thousand units (-52%), in the segment of buses — 4262 units (-53%). The market for new electric vehicles amounted to 3,754 units (-62%), the share of those manufactured in the Russian Federation was 20%.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade explained that in May, seasonality is traditionally an additional factor influencing the decline in sales compared to April. And the rate of decline in sales of domestic models is lower than that of foreign cars — their sales relative to May 2024 decreased by 15% (to 57.6 thousand units) and 43% (to 44.8 thousand units), respectively.
Earlier that day, the head of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, announced that from January to May 2025, sales of new Lada cars amounted to 131.2 thousand units, which is 26.3% less than in the same period last year. He suggested that in June sales could also decrease by a quarter in annual terms and reach about 30 thousand units.
