The lifting of US sanctions against Iran is a "fundamental element" of cooperation between the two countries. This was announced on June 2 by the official representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Bagai.

"It is absolutely clear to us that the issue of lifting sanctions will be a fundamental element of any understanding with the United States, and, of course, no understanding will be formed before we see the lifting of sanctions. The purpose [of the sanctions] is nothing more than persecution and pressure on the Iranian people," the Iranian newspaper Entekhab quoted him as saying.

Bagai also commented on the attempt of the US Congress to adopt a resolution on the imposition of sanctions against Iran, calling it a "clear contradiction."

"This is a clear contradiction in the US approach. On the one hand, they are talking about mutual understanding, and on the other, they are not taking the lifting of sanctions seriously, but are introducing new ones," the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman concluded.

Earlier in the day, The Wall Street Journal reported that US President Donald Trump's policy of exerting "maximum pressure" on Iran had been suspended. It is noted that the new policy is aimed at analyzing potential restrictions against Tehran "in the light of sensitive nuclear negotiations."
