An American economist questioned the benefits of the metals deal for the US economy

The agreement between the United States and Ukraine on rare earth metals will not provide benefits to the American economy. This was announced on Saturday, May 31, by Professor Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University (New York).
"Not really," he replied to a TASS question about whether the US economy would benefit from the resource deal.
As the expert pointed out, no one is certainly aware of exactly what reserves are on the Ukrainian territory, and accordingly, the benefits of their extraction as a whole have not been assessed. At the same time, Sachs did not rule out that Ukraine possesses valuable minerals. However, according to him, it is unlikely that the Ukrainian reserves can become a "gold mine" for the United States.
On May 1, Washington and Kiev signed an agreement on mineral resources. As part of it, a special investment fund will be created, which should direct the proceeds from the development of deposits to the restoration of Ukraine.
At the same time, according to media reports, the concluded deal will not bring profit from mining for a decade and will require large investments from the private sector to implement the projects.
