Sweden intends to tighten control over foreign vessels in the Baltic Sea
The Swedish government has decided to strengthen control measures over foreign vessels passing through the Baltic Sea. This was reported on May 31 by the Swedish Sveriges Radio Ekot with reference to the Minister of Justice of Sweden Gunnar Stremmer.
From July 1, the Swedish Coast Guard and the Swedish Maritime Administration will be able to collect insurance information from ships that not only enter the port, but also pass through Swedish waters or an economic zone.
"We expect that this will have a preventive, deterrent effect on ships that are part of the Russian shadow fleet, as well as serve as a basis for taking other measures, for example, to impose sanctions on more ships," said Stremmer.
According to him, despite the fact that the courts are not required to answer the question of insurance, the lack of answers may be a reason for closer monitoring of them.
On March 8, the United States rejected Canada's proposal to create a task force that would monitor the so-called shadow fleet, which, as stated in the West, carries Russian oil. In addition to vetoing Canada's proposal to establish a task force to monitor sanctions violations, the draft G7 statement, which the agency reviewed, shows that the United States insisted on removing the word "sanctions" in the section on Russia.
